Fontana, California is a small city located in the San Bernardino County of Northern California. The population was 53,807 at the 2010 census. Fontana is home to two universities, Chico State University and Northridge Community College. The city also has a variety of businesses including law enforcement agencies and gun stores. The name of Fontana was given to it by Captain George A. Fontaine, who named it after his family's estate in France. The first post office in Fontana opened on July 8, 1885. In 1915, General John J. Pershing ordered all American soldiers stationed in and around Argentina to withdraw into their own countries so that they could not be used as guerrillas by Chilean nationalists against Argentine forces occupying that country; this order led to the Battle of Salta which ended with the surrender of Chilean nationalist forces including many generals and officers to Argentine forces commanded by Field Marshal Marcelino López de Santa Cruz. On October 24-25, 1920, Fontana played host to one ofnote fairs celebrating California's centennial: "The Earliest Californians". The event drew more than 350 exhibitors from throughout southern California and Nevada and attracted thousands of people from all over North America who came to see Native American artifacts and other historic items from across California combined with demonstrations on horseback riding through Mexican territory at what is now known as Mesa Verde National Park (the park was established in 1917). This event has been called "the world's first open-air exhibition" because it took place without barriers between buyers and sellers or security measures such as fences or roadblocks preventing entrance into the fairgrounds by anyone other than those authorized by organizers. On May 5-7th 1952 a large fire broke out during an outdoor show sponsored by Anheuser Busch beer company near present day Spring Valley Drive & Rte 495 West burning for hours before being extinguished with no loss human life or property

Fontana has been a small town in the San Bernardino County area of Southern California since 1887. It is located on the eastern edge of Riverside County and straddles the border of Kern and Riverside counties. In 1887, farmers in Fontana started selling produce from their fields to customers in nearby cities such as Pomona and Claremont. The first store in Fontana was built on Main Street by Fenton W. Flood, a member of the original town board. The arrival of railroads in southern California during the late 19th century allowed for increased trade between the towns along the railroad tracks. By 1915, Fontana had a post office, four general stores, three blacksmiths, two doctors, one bakery and one undertaker. In 1916, fire destroyed part of downtown and caused damages that amounted to $10,000 dollars. In 1925, when Fontana incorporated as an unincorporated community under state law it became one of sixteen communities statewide designated as "Ghost Towns" by then-Governor Pinchas Goldwater due to their unique history or culture that had not changed significantly since World War II. The designation applied only to communities with less than 1 population per square mile which were located outside city limits or on university campuses at that time; Fontana met all criteria including having no school buildings older than 1917 and no businesses older than 1925. Fontana experienced rapid growth following World War II when more people moved into the area because of new jobs available in postwar industries such as aerospace manufacturing and shipbuilding. The population reached 3,000 by 1970 but declined to 2,500 by 2000 due mainly to aging populations and reductions in military spending throughout much of California during those years). However, recent economic development has revived interest in downtown business areas including art galleries/salons/culinary schools/and nightlife venues while also developing new neighborhoods adjacent to commercial corridors within minutes’ walk or drive of central business districts across multiple county boundaries .

In 1886, a school was started and soon it became a center for education in the area. By 1910, there were over 100 businesses in town and it had a population of 2,000 people. The following year, Fontana became an incorporated city with its own government and police department. By 1930, the population had reached 5,000 people and within 10 years it had grown to 20,000 residents. In 1961, Fontana merged with neighboring Rancho Mirage to form one large community known today as Fontana-Rancho Mirage Unified School District
