Fontana, California is a city in Riverside County, California. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of Fontana Creek, about 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Riverside. The history of Fontana goes back to 1887 when John Waddell and his brother-in-law James A. Haughey purchased 640 acres (250 ha) along the banks of Fontana Creek from Edwin Harry Mortensen for $10,000. They named their new town after George Washington Carver, who had donated land to them in 1884. In 1905, they removed all trees on their 640 acres (250 ha) and replaced them with palm trees and citrus groves as part of a $5 million public works project called "The Scenic Route". The city was incorporated on December 15, 1912. On November 6, 1957, two tankers were sunk by fire off the coast of Fontana while en route from Wilmington to Los Angeles; both men died as a result. This event made Fontana an international sensation and helped make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California during that time period. In 1990, Mayor Rudy Giuliani announced that he would build a new stadium for the Chargers football team in downtown Fontana – which became known as Qualcomm Stadium – just east of Interstate 5 Exit 137A/Riverside Boulevard overpassing State Street near where Interstate 5 enters Riverside County from Orange County. The stadium would be home to both the Chargers and NFL's Rams football teams until 2002 when both teams moved to Stadia Park in Carson City Nevada due to funding problems with that city’s stadium construction project).
