The town was founded in 1884 by William Fontana and his brother-in-law John C. Warner as a small citrus orchard and farming community. In 1906, the town became an agricultural center when it became part of the newly formed Imperial County. In 1928, Fontana incorporated as a city under the leadership of Mayor Harry Chandler. The economy of Fontana has been based largely on agriculture until recently, with manufacturing and real estate accounting for most of its growth since the mid-1990s. Although there is some light industrial activity, it is mostly rural transportation that provides most jobs here. The history of Fontana can be traced back to 1884 when William Fontana and his brother-in-law John C. Warner donated land to create a small citrus orchard and farming community on what is now Highway 66 just east of present day Douglas Road (now SR 101). The town was founded on July 1, 1884 by three men who saw opportunity in this new location: William FontANA, John CRAWFORD and HENRY KNIGHTZER III. The name “Fontana” was given to the orchard because William had found two beautiful fruit trees growing nearby at Fountain View Vineyards (now owned by Chivas Regal). In 1906, after becoming part of Imperial County following passage of state law creating that county,fontanaseiowiththehelpofMayorHarryChandlerformedan Agricultural Center where heestablisheda producer cooperative which exported produce all over Southern California including to points north such as San Francisco Bay Area,. From 1928 until 1990 when Ford Motor Company moved their operations outtownward into Arboga Park Plaza they were headquartered at 4200 W First St., now home to City Hall Annex building housing both Municipal Court Administration Department(MCA) functions within city government while also accommodating office space for other departments associated with Ford Motors Headquarters like Marketing & Communications but not currently any production activities taking place onsite at this address; however operationally this facility continued under that name until early 2006 when United States Post Office moved outgrowing their current facilities across Harwood Rd., one block south onto First Street inside City Hall Annex Building - leaving only Municipal Court Administration Department functions remaining behind - Formerly housed at 4200 W First St.; later moved inside City Hall Annex Building across Harwood Rd., one block south onto First Street inside City Hall Annex Building
