Fontana is a small city located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 8,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fontana is home to the Fontana Raceway and three smaller track races: the USFAA World Challenge Race Meeting on July 4th and 5th, the Southern California 400 on November 17th-19th, and the Italian Open on May 25th-27th. Fontana was founded by five brothers who ran a wagon shop and post office in what is now downtown Fontana. They named their town after a fountain in Rome called fontanella which means "bell tower." The first post office opened in 1887. In 1912, town fathers decided to build a water tower with ice storage that would provide drinking water for residents during drought years. On December 6, 1913, when it was completed, Fontana became one of fifty communities within Kern County to receive municipal water service from Northern California Municipal Water District #1 (later renamed PGW). In 1928 Mayor James Fenton dedicated an outdoor swimming pool near downtown Fontana which still exists today as City Pool No. 1 (now known as Fontana Community Pool). In 1933 Mayor Averill Coolidge dedicated City Hall which still stands today as one of three surviving buildings from the original town center plat that were destroyed by fire in 1984. In 1941 City Councilman John Laughlin donated land to createfontanasouthparkwhichstill remainsonthecityblockwhere manyofthefontanasportsareheldtodayincludinggolf.,batting cages,,andarcrosseballgames. The 1945 bombing of Hiroshima killed over 50 people including mayor Laughlin who had been pushing for construction of an air raid shelter in downtown Fontana just east of City Hall Plaza where he resided at the time with his family and local dignitaries along with other mayors from throughout Kern County assembled for a celebration marking Japan's surrender days later that year at nearby Valleyfair Park . . . commemorating those lost can be seen all around town today including inside City Hall Plaza where several large iron plaques commemorate each victim’s life and death while also featuring hand-painted murals depicting everyday life during Hiroshima at that time... since then many other civic organizations have made similar contributions such as donating or movinginkingsthatonce belongedtoHiroshima bomb victims into downtownFontanytomarkthecompletionofthedisaster.. Fontana is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It is located on the banks of the Kern River. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. When Europeans first arrived in what is now Kern County in 1847 they discovered a thriving trade with Yaqui Indians and gathered Native American artifacts to sell back to the Yaqui. The town was founded by settlers named DeForest, Griggs and others who came up the river from Stockton in 1849. By 1870 Fontana had a population of 350 people. A post office was established at Fontana in 1875, and grew steadily through the years with an average mailing rate of 2 letters per day. The discovery of oil near Fontana during World War II led to increased production throughout Kern County and more residents moved into the town over time. In 1965 when gas prices increased to their present level, local businesses lobbied for a tax increase which resulted in passage of Proposition 13 which capped property values within certain limits. As recently as 2000 however, Fontana still boasted one of lowest property values for any city or rural community in California according to Forbes magazine’s list of America’s Most Dynamic Cities/Rural Areas (smaller communities ranked highest). Today many residents continue their traditions of agriculture, ranching and fishing while enjoying downtown shopping DISTRICT PARKS such as Main Street Plaza with its wide variety of stores including Macy’s department store and JCPenney; Union Pacific Railroad tracks that run through town providing an interesting landscape; excellent access to Highway 49A which provides easy access both east-west and north-south shopping; irrigated farmland stretching several miles downriver from town providing another attractive landscape feature; An elementary school (Fletcher Elementary School), Middle School (Lonely Hill Intermediate School) and High School (Fontana High School) – all dedicated to educating children within walking distance from their homes making it easy for them to get involved in various aspects of life here!
Fontana was founded in 1887 by James W. Hill and his wife, Emma L. Hill. The first store was located on the corner of 9th Street and Avenue C. The store grew rapidly and soon opened a second location at 108th Avenue and Avenue D. In 1906, Fontana became an incorporated city with a population of around 1000 people. In 1933, Fontana joined the California State University system as a campus community with over 6000 students living on campus in 26 buildings including the School of Music and Performing Arts and the School of Business Administration. In 1937, Fontana established its own fire department with 30 firefighters who responded to 827 calls that year alone. In 1969, Fontana was incorporated as a city again with a population of over 10,000 people when it merged with neighboring Turlock to become one of the most populous cities in California. Today, Fontana is known for its shopping districts - especially at nearby Macy's - as well as its vehement opposition to Measure B which would have raised taxes by $5 million per year while reducing educational opportunities for low-income residents
