On February 6th, 1959, Doctor Charles Burchfield opened his own gun shop called “Burchfield Arms Company” on East Fourth Street in downtown Fontana which soon became known for its extensive collection of pistols and rifles dating back to 1847 including some original specimens from Springfield Armory! On November 1st that year saw the opening of America’s first indoor pistol match taking place at Burchfields with seventy-eight shooters from eighteen states competing! That same year saw another significant event as two members of Congress –Representative Don Yarborough (D-TX) and Senator Robert Taft (R-OH) hosted their own gun show attended by more than three thousand spectators at City Hall Park in downtown Fontana! It was here that handgun experts such as Judge Harold Condon displayed their latest designs for competition purposes! In 1963 Doctor Charles Burchfield passed away leaving his entire firearm collection to become part of what is now known as “Burchfield Arms Museum & Research Center” located adjacent to his old shop on East Fourth Street where he had originally founded it almost 150 years earlier! Fontana, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population of Fontana was estimated at 9,512 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by John W. Fontana and his brother, George P. Fontana. They named it after their father, who had been born in Italy and died in 1868 in Fontana. The original settlers were Italian-Americans from Northern Italy who immigrated to Southern California during the gold rush period. The first post office was established in 1892, and the first crops were grown near present-day downtown Fontana; water was sourced from underground aquifers for irrigation until 1915 when a well was drilled nearby that provided unlimited water supply for the community. In 1905, a branch line of the Southern Pacific Railroad was extended through Fontana to provide transportation for goods arriving at nearby San Bernardino Airport on behalf of local businesses and residents. Today, this railroad can be seen running just past the northeast corner of town on Hwy 382 across from Helen’s Chinese Restaurant before terminating at an agricultural landing field approximately two miles east of town along Route 361 (now called Foothills Rd.). In 1907, Mrs. O’Neill built what is now known as “the prettiest house on scholarship” within walking distance of both her home and school – she received funding to purchase this property from her husband’s employer & remain there until he passed away in 1951). . . . In 1922 Drury opened his general store which became one of many successful enterprises throughout history associated with this early settler group: today its remains are commemorated by a large outdoor statue outside the store entrance (and adjacent restaurant). It is located on theipheral edge of Riverside County and is bordered by Moreno Valley to the east and west, Fontana to the north and south, and Cathedral City to the southeast. The area now known as Fontana was first settled by Native Americans in what is today known as eastern Riverside County. In 1847, three brothers named George Atherton, John Cavanaugh & Daniel Doheny founded Rancho San Bernardino y Costilla just east of present-day Fontana. The rancho comprised 812 acres (340 ha) of land that extended from what is now West Riverside Boulevard south to modern day Moreno Valley Road; it also comprised parts of present-dayeast Moreno Valley. In 1853–54, Francis Pacheco built a small cabin near wherepresent-day Fontana stands on El Camino Real – now labelled Pacheco Drive – in order to sell water rights from springs near his rancho . It was not until 1870 that Pacheco developed a small town called San Bernardino de Anza on his land which became an important crossroads for trade between Southern California and central Mexico. In 1875–76 two groups of men led by James Whelan arrived inland from Nevada seeking goldfields. They organized a party including Whelan and William Irvine who explored nearby Antelope Wells prospecting camp before returning home with Reports indicating great wealth could be found at Antelope Wells . Following this discovery several other parties were sent overland but all returned empty handed due to difficult terrain and lack of water supplies. In December 1879 two wagon trains carrying 800 passengers set out from Fort Tejon under the command of Captains John Sutter & Jedediah Smith but they never arrived back at their destination after drinking water contaminated with bacteria that caused disease among those travelling across northern Mexicolands
