When Folsom was founded in 1868, it was a small town of around 1,000 people. The community had two schools and one sawmill. By the end of the 20th century, Folsom had become a major center for telescope production and research. In 1951, the first large telescope on Earth—the Hale-Bopp Telescope at Mount Wilson—was built here. Since then, Folsom has seen many impressive technological advancements in the field of astronomy. In 2007, Folsom became home to the world’s largest CCD camera system when it opened up a new facility called Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). Today, Folsom is an important center for astronomical research across multiple disciplines including astrophysics, planetary science, photometry and astrometry. It is also home to several colleges and universities including UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco – both of which are world-renowned experts in aerospace engineering and computer science respectively.

Folsom is a city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 25,397 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River. Folsom's name comes from its location on Folsom Creek and from early Spanish explorers who named it San Miguel de la Folsomita (or "Majestic Mountain"). The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, during his expedition led by two brothers: Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Alonso de Alvarado. He charted what he thought were active ranges of mountains near modern-day Folsom and Isabella Heights; however, he did not explore them further because they appeared too difficult to traverse. In 1769, José Joaquín Bernal Dominguez founded a rancho in present-day Folsom that became known as Rancho Cerro Gordo (meaning "Hills of the White Mountain"). From here Francisco Cámpora explored parts of present-day Fresno County in 1821 while serving as captain general of Mexico's army under President Antonio López Zúñiga. Mexican land grants covered most of what is now eastern Fresno County when it was part of Mexican territory. On November 12, 1848, US Navy Commodore John Waddell sighted land off the coast of southern California while patrolling the Pacific Northwest; this event is generally considered to be the first discovery of California by Europeans. On July 14, 1849 US Naval Lieutenant James Kossuth sailed into Central Bay with HMS Beagle and discovered Monterey Peninsula which would later become used for military purposes as well as for cattle grazing operations aroundpresent-day El Sobrante and Half Moon Bay. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is known for its natural resources including citrus fruit, grapes, almonds, and wine. Folsom has a rich history that includes events such as the 1959 earthquake which left much of downtown destroyed and Folsom's first post office being opened on July 1st 1859.
One of the earliest scopes to be produced was the Fijian Government telescope, which was built in 1868. This instrument used a convex mirror with a focal length of about 350 yards. The first telescopic objects ever sighted were two stars at a distance of about 362 miles each. In 1892, British scientists developed and constructed the Royal Observatory's 8-in-1 Telescope, which had a field of view of 156 degrees. The following year, astronomers began using photographic plates to capture images from afar and this allowed them to see things that they could not have observed with their naked eye. By 1912, scopes had reached their current form with the introduction of Carl Zeiss' 2nd Model Schmidt reflecting telescope. This instrument has an aperture size of about 0.25 inches and can image objects up to a distance of almost 24 million miles!

The name comes from the Spanish word "fuego," meaning fire. In 1876, the townsite of Folsom Heights was platted and became part of the larger city of Sacramento. In 1912, citizens of both cities merged to form a new city called Folsom. The history of Folsom goes back to 1872 when Jim Folsom and John B. Sutter founded what is now known as Folsom Wells in Sacramento County after they lost their farmlands in the Gold Rush era. From its early days,Folsom served as a transportation hub for goods moving between Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area via wagon or stagecoach routes. The town prospered until 1876, when it amalgamated with other nearby towns to form the new City of Sacramento pursuant to an act by then-Governor Hiram Johnson Jr.: "An Act Concerning Towns Incorporating Therewith." In 1912, after years of growth but without any major developments on either side, voters decided that it was time for a new city government with more centralized control over all aspects of municipal life within its boundaries—a move that would eventually lead to the incorporation into one entity that we know today as Sacramento County: "An Act for Establishing an Municipal Government for Sacramento County". The first mayor under this new municipal government was C A Grieve, who served two terms from 1912-15 before being replaced by W M Kingdon during his third term in 1915 due to increasing public sentiment against Mayor Kingdon's heavy hand on local affairs (he had also been caught up in graft scandals). In 1924 Mayor George Kapp set about transforming what would become known as "the downtown district" into something more modern and pedestrian-friendly with brick sidewalks lining Market Street (then North Capitol Street), installed free water fountains throughout the district (laterCity Hall Square), built a library and parkette adjacent thereto (Kapp Place), opened up some businesses around Forest Hill Cemetery (the old home site of Monterey Park) and began work on turning around what would come to be known as Chinatowns/Cranes Plaza eastward along 2nd Street towards University Avenue/Fremont Boulevard/Washington Boulevard; although at first these changes were limited largely to downtown areas only - gradually they spread outwards through various neighborhoods westward until all neighbourhoods had access to central services located near their respective commercial districts - making it possible for residents living northwest or southeast situated between University Avenue/Fremont Boulevard/Washington Boulevardand Interstate 5 north were even able to enjoy fairly high quality public services despite having quite different addresses from those south or southwest lying within easy driving distance onlyof downtown districts such as Cranes Plaza."
