The early 20th century saw heavy industrialization in neighboring Kern County; however, few factories were located within town limits until 1927 when Folsom Local 8 (the forerunner of today's Unified School District) was organized with seven schools: three public schools (grades K-12), two parochial schools (grades 7-12), and one private school (grade 12). The post office opened in 1907 and continued serving residents until it closed in 1966 when the community consolidated with nearby East Folsom into one municipality. The original Main Street ran parallel to Railroad Avenue running south to north while several side streets served as turnoffs leading to various outposts such as Girdwood Ranch northeast of town, Westside ranches east of town, Pioneer Trails west of town, and much later Anvil Heights east of town which served as a military airfield during World War II. Today only Girdwood Ranch remains open as an agricultural research station run by UC Davis scientists.. In 1970s Folsom lost its role as an agricultural center due primarily to changes brought about by suburban growth around it while also seeing increased crime rates although job opportunities have since begun increasing again along with new housing developments called "Folsoms". Today there are many businesses that have moved into or are moving into downtown including Starbucks Coffee Company (), Lowe's Home Improvement (), Facebook ()(), Google ()(), Adobe Systems (), Apple Inc ().
