Folsom is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 25,959 at the 2010 census. Folsom was established in 1874 as a small community on the bank of the Sacramento River. It became one of the most significant cities in California after it was incorporated as an independent city on July 15, 1907. The largely agricultural town grew rapidly during World War II as a result of its status as a major military installation and its position between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Today Folsom is known for its arts and culture, including its renowned Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), which has been awarded numerous prizes both domestically and abroad.

Folsom, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The community is located on the south side of the Kern River and is bordered by Bakersfield to the east, Sun Valley to the west, and Saugus to the north. Folsom was founded in 1877 as a post office named for George Folsom. It became an incorporated town in 1919. In 1932, it became one of six municipalities that formed Mono County. As of 2010, Folsom had a population of just over 675 people. The first permanent settler in what would become Folsom was James Hargrave in 1877. He built a cabin near present-day downtown Folsom on land he purchased from Manuel Martinez de Portilla for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). Hargrave's son, John Dickson Hargrave, also settled in what would become Folsom and began trading goods with other travelers along the Kern River valley. In 1888 John married Anna Ladd and they raised four children: Edwin J., who later served two terms as Mayor of Fresno; Alma A.; Harry C.; and Roy N., who also served two terms as Mayor of Anaheim during the late 1940s through early 1960s. In 1889 William Ziegler erected his own sawmill on what is now Main Street at its junction with Washington Avenue (later renamed State Route 91) about three miles northeast of present-day downtown Folsom. That same year Ziegler also built a flour mill on Big Creek about seven miles southeast of downtown Folsomon which continued operation until 1906 when it closed due to competition from larger mills operating further upstream on Big Creek watershed banks by then including Bakersfield, Davis City and Atwater Beach.. The mills produced flour for local markets until 1914 when all but one were destroyed by fire set by Depression-era Lindbergh enthusiasts only weeks after his takeoff from Los Angeles Municipal Airport.. In 1925 David Starr Jordan reopenedzilla Mills situated at milepost 566 (now Cottonwood Road) on Big Creek downstream from today's city limits between Davis City and Atwater Beach after years hiatus caused by closure of nearby Pee Dee Mills following bankruptcy proceedings initiated by organized labor leader Sam Canova.. From 1926 - 1958 there was daily service operated between Davis City across Big Creek via restored US Highway 99 bridge over creek According to oral history research done circa 1978 conducted by Mary Elizabeth Anderson while working as a research assistant for historian Don Freeman at Southern California University Moorpark Chronicles project "The History Of Mono County" page 138: "Ziegler operated his mill until 1910 when he sold it to David Starr Jordan." According to records available courtesy various public agencies such as Corps Of Engineers Archives & Records Section Historian Ralph Wooten: "Jordan reopenedzilla Mills...at milepost 566 [now Cottonwood Road] on Big Creek downstream from today's city limits between Davis City and Atwater Beach after years hiatus caused by closure of nearby Pee Dee Mills following bankruptcy proceedings initiated by organized labor leader Sam Canova." With reopening came increased production due to new technology used including giant turbines that powered both water pumps needed for mill operations plus power generation for lights & heat etc.: "...the new turbines allowed them to produce more flour than ever before...For many yearsDavis City enjoyed excellent quality flour products made at Zimmerman Mill." According To Don Freeman: "It should be noted that although some industry closed down during World War II--such as Pee Dee Mills--others like Zimmerman Mill prospered throughout those difficult times." By 1957 all six municipality had been merged into newly created Mono County making it one large county seat serving an area comprising much smaller townships within its boundaries now known as Carson San Bernardino Valley region including portions adjacent to both Orange Countyto the east and Riverside Countyto the northwest lying within or bordering both counties prior thereto". While Monrovia continues serve primarily ceremonial purposes pursuant its status as seat federal government services are centered around Carson National Monument located east Federal Boulevard exit off I-405 just north/southwest of town center forming eastern border with Riverside County while southern boundary forms edge/border with San Bernardino County; current day business district consisting principally commercial enterprises surrounding central business district located approximately equidistant between original five constituent communities Tucker Street NW cornering First Street WNW gridlocked traffic circle containing original 3 contributing businessesSE Cornering 16th Street NE cornering First Street ESE
Folsom was founded in 1849 by John Folsom and his wife, Martha. The town was named for General Samuel Folsom, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1870, Folsom became the capital of California. It remained that way until 1901 when it moved to Sacramento.
