Folsom, California is a small town in Sacramento County, California. It has a population of about 397 people as of the 2010 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Folsom were some hardy men and women who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1868. They named their new community after General George Custer's forces who had just fought at Little Bighorn. The post office was established at Folsom on July 8, 1870, and remained open until it was discontinued on November 3, 1903. The first store at Folsom opened on December 12, 1871. A water supply was obtained from the nearby Yuba River and for a time there was also a public school. In 1884 the United States Post Office Department changed the name of the town to honor General John Jumper Ulysses S. Grant's visit to that area two years earlier and to promote Spanish culture in Central California. In 1911 local residents petitioned state officials to change the name of their town back to its original spelling because they felt that "Folsom" had become an embarrassment since it had been changed more than once since its inception as an American settlement. The request was not granted but "Mountain View" became an official part of the community within five years thereafter when Mountain View Avenue (now I-5) crossed over Railroad Boulevard (now State Route 21) just north of town limits
