Gun targets have been a part of Folsom, California for over 100 years. The first target rifle was created in 1892 by Elisha Gray. At that time, guns were not as prevalent as they are now and target shooting was not an everyday occurrence. However, the Target Rifle Association (TRA) is credited with starting the modern target shooting tradition in Folsom. In 1906, TRA organized the first county-wide competition at Cedar Park Ranch. There were also club meets held throughout the years to keep track of local shooting events and new guns being developed. In 1978, TAR became the California State Archery Association (CSAA). Membership has grown steadily since then and today there are more than 5,000 shooters from around the state affiliated with CSAA. In 1868, Folsom was the first town in California to allow firearms. The following year, the U.S. military established a small arsenal there to help train Mexican troops during the Mexican-American War. In 1872, Folsom became an unincorporated community when it absorbed portions of Colusa and Sacramento Counties. The United States Post Office opened in Folsom in 1887 and served as its primary center for mail service until 1913. In 1925, the city of Folsom merged with Sacramento County to form a new unified government called the State of California. During World War II, Folsom was home to two large naval maneuvers: "Operation Crossroads" on September 15–16, 1942 and "Phantom Fleet" on October 20–21, 1942. The Navy's largest amphibious exercise ever staged in North America occurred at Naval Air Station Northrop Field in nearby Petaluma on November 8–11, 1943 during Operation Magic Carpet. Folsom is now a bedroom community located within Sacramento County with a population of over 165,000 people as of 2018.
