In 1875, the county seat was moved from Fresno to Folsom. In 1911, the state legislature renamed Fresno County after General George Custer to honor him for his bravery during the Mexican–American War. The towns of East Gertrude and North Gertrude were also named after General Custer. A hydroelectric power plant was built in Folsom in 1913 and it became one of California's primary sources of electrical generation until 1974 when it closed down. The population of Folsom grew rapidly during World War II due to the growth of agriculture and military production; by 1950, it had reached over 100,000 people.
