Folsom, California is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Stockton and Fresno. Folsom was founded in 1868 by John C. Folsom and named for him. Folsom's first post office was established in 1868 and closed in 1869 because of the gold rush. The first store opened in 1870 on Main Street and operated until it burned down in 1902. In 1895, the townsite was platted with a square blockgrid pattern and name changed to Folsom City after Mayor George Folsom became its first mayoralty; this name remained until 1989 when it reverted to its original spelling of Folsom after an ordinance change that took effect that year. In 2002, city limits were expanded south to include what is now the nearby unincorporated community of Lodi. The current Courthouse Square building (built 1906) is home to most of the municipal government including City Hall, Police Department Headquarters, Fire Department Headquarters and numerous other public buildings as well as two high school schools: Pershing High School (opened 1901) and Carson-Newman Jr./Snell High School (opened 1965). When the old Courthouse building burned down in 1966 it provided temporary housing for fire victims until a new building could be erected across Market Street from Pershing High School while construction proceeded on Carson-Newman Jr./Snell High School which opened September 27th 1969 as one of America’s largest open-air high Schools with more than 12 thousand students from grades 10 through 12 from over sixty stateside countries who attended its inaugural class
