In 1915, Fillmore became one of the first cities in California to win passage of Proposition 8, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. Fillmore is a town in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 9,929 at the 2010 census. It is located in the East Bay Area of San Francisco. Fillmore began as a small farming community on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 18 miles northeast of downtown San Francisco. In 1855, Fillmore was given to George Wernham by millionaire and politician John Sutter. Wernham had purchased land upstream from present-day Fillmore from Nicholas Dole in 1849 and named it after himself and his fill of Oregon Tobacco he had bought from Mexican traders two years earlier. A post office called Fillmore was established in 1856, and remained in operation until 1870. In 1860, when gold was discovered near Oroville, California (then part of Albany County), Fillmore became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Sacramento and Golden Gate City; its residents were among the first to invest in mines around these new boundaries. By 1865, however, goldmining had stopped development around Fillmore because many people found no ore or could not afford it; what little mining there did take place centered around nearby Dixon Gulch. During World War II much of Fillmore's manufacturing industry took up space within newly createdAAF Air Forces Base Donner Pass which sat atop gravelly hills just outside town limits: planes would come down low for landing on long runways that sloped gently downward into valleys cutting through high hills well beyond the city limits; then they would taxi out onto those runways before takeoff into steep valleys leading back out again to Donner Pass—a procedure known as "landing without wheels." Aircraft parts assembly lines developed here during these years that continue to this day at nearby Proctor Tech Airport just outside town limits—an event being headlined by one recent visitor as "The Battle for Landmark Air Force Base" (A photo accompanying this article shows a large hangar now used as part of Alameda County Regional Library). When World War II ended hostilities in 1945 all production at Donner Pass ceased due to lack of war surplus materials; however some aircraft still remain parked at AFB today including Boeing 727s and 747s which are slowly being retired one by one! Today even more businesses have sprung up around the airport such as gas stations/motels/restaurants etc., with locals mostly commuting into SF for work or shopping while others commute into Oakland or Berkeley which has much better public transportation options than fillMORE!

Fillmore was founded in 1800 by Captain George Fillmore, an American Revolutionary War veteran and explorer. The town was named for General John H. Fillmore, who had commanded the U.S. forces at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. After years of development, Fillmore became a thriving center for mercantile activity and agricultural production during the late 19th century. Growth stalled after World War II, however, and the town has only sporadically been visited since then. The town's most significant event occurred on March 31st, 1912 when President William Howard Taft performed a dedication speech at its municipal hall in honor of California Governor James Fenton and local hero General Tunney. Taft also signed a bill authorizing the erection of a USDOJ building in Fillmore that would serve as state capital from 1913 to 1917. In recent years, redevelopment efforts have resumed in Fillmore with the goal of revitalizing the community as an attractive place to live, work, or play. One notable project is the fillipration of two small downtown blocks which were formerly designated as surplus land within city limits following annexation by neighboring cities during Measure B (1997). In addition to providing much-needed pedestrian access along San Francisco's Embarcadero waterfront area north of Market Street, this project will also create new housing opportunities throughout downtown and other parts of town while preserving historic fabric dating back to 1852.
FILLMORE, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 2, 1897: The first train to enter Fillmore Station arrived on April 1, 1897. A group of men and boys were the first to step off the train. They were followed by a group of women and girls who had come to visit the new town. The townsite was developed by General George Armstrong Custer, who in 1868 founded what is now called Custer City near today's Fillmore. In 1870, he organized what is now known as the Fillmore Railway Company, which opened a line from eastern Sacramento to Fillmore. The population of Fillmore grew rapidly during the 1880s and 1890s due to immigration from Mexico and Central America. By 1895, Fillmore had a population of about 25 residents; it became an incorporated city on July 1 that year. Fillmore quickly become an important transportation center for California because it connected several counties with railroads; two miles north of town was Blue Springs Railroad station where passengers could catch trains headed east or west to cities such as San Francisco and Sacramento. The arrival of electric locomotives in 1903 made travel between these cities much easier and more affordable than prior methods; this also led to significant growth in business at the local lumberjacks' mills located close by fillmoreside businesses like Butte Ranch Mining Company
