Fillmore is a small town in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 25 miles east of Stockton and 30 miles west of Fresno. Fillmore has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was founded as a ferry landing on the river by Colonel Edward Fillmore and his family. Today, Fillmore is an agricultural community with many small businesses and residences. The name "Fillmore" originated from General John Forbes' visit there in 1847 during his Overland Expedition into Central California. After he had traveled through several other towns in that area before arriving at Fillmore, General Forbes named one of these towns after him - Fillmore Valley (now known as Black River Valley). In 1849, Colonel James Waddell established what would become known as Fillmore Agricultural Institute which became one of the leading agricultural research centers in California. In 1865, Fanny Wright married Hiram Sutter who had come from nearby Stockton and renamed his new settlement "Sutterville". When Fanny died in 1911, her husband left all their holdings to her children but they sold them all off within 5 years to form what is now called the Wright Family Foundation for Preservation and Education which operates today as fillMORE United Way . fillMORE also began its own festival series in 1984 called "Festival Festivals", which ran for over 20 years until 2007 when it was replaced by "Festivals USA" held annually at The Music Hall of San Francisco downtown ballpark. Fillmore was founded in 1849 by John Fillmore and his brother, Zenas. The brothers were inspired to found the town after experiencing a religious revival in Fillmore Valley. They named it after George Washington’s birthplace, Mount Vernon, Virginia. The Fillmores quickly realized that they needed a more permanent name for their new community since they could not get people to stay for long periods of time. They settled on Fillmore because it sounded like an Americana word--something unique and lush. The first store in the town was opened by Zenas Fillmore in 1850. By 1861, there were six stores in the town and four churches. The population of the town grew rapidly during its early years, reaching 100 by 1865. However, by 1870 the population had decreased to 30 due to various factors such as lack of economic opportunities and violence coming from nearby saloons. In 1872 George Hearst purchased two-thirds of the stock of Northern Pacific Railroad which led to growth for Fillmore again; however, this growth also came with some risks as Hearst was extremely wealthy but uninterested in spending money frivolously on things like education or infrastructure projects. In 1875 he sold his interest in NP&O and filled up his pockets with cash while leaving behind a struggling town that would struggle until well into the 20th century without any real progress made other than a fewitenties from Hearst himself
Fillmore was a settlement in the Central Valley of California, United States. It was established in 1847 by Capt. John Fillmore and his wife Eliza Ann Garrison as a rancho on the east side of San Joaquin River. The first permanent settler was George Akeley, who arrived in 1848. In 1850, Fillmore became the county seat of Contra Costa County and remained so until it was moved to Richmond in 1914.
