Fillmore, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded on July 10, 1879 by James Fillmore and his wife Mary Anna Robinson. The Fillmores were the first white people to settle in this area. The name of the town comes from the Fillmore Ranch which was located here. It was named after General George Custer who was killed in 1876 during the Dakota Wars. The ranch belonged to Judge John Leland and his brother-in-law John Sutter. The Fillmores started a small grocery store in what is now known as downtown Fillmore. They also had a post office, bank and school at this time. In 1903 they built a frame church called Our Savior's Anglican Church which still stands today. In 1916 they started the first Xanthon Manufacturing Company which manufactured ear plugs for military use. After World War I, there were increasing shortages of munitions so the company went into receivership in 1925 but it re-emerged again two years later with new management under its current name of Acoustic Solutions Incorporated (ASI). ASI produced over 100 different types of ear plugs until it closed its doors in 1999 due to financial difficulties. Today, many people know about ASI because of their product called "Earplugs by Acoustic Solutions."
