The name Fillmore comes from an early settler, John Fillmore. He arrived in 1849 and built a cabin on the site that would become Fillmore Village. When the railroad came through San Joaquin County in 1852, he sold his land to the railway company for $5 per acre (the price then doubled when statehood was granted). In 1857, Fillmore became part of Claremont with its own post office and school district. In 1861, it became part of Fresno City; however, in 1865 it reverted back to Claremont again due to lack of central government support for towns over 100 people.
