In addition, many residents have moved away for job opportunities or other reasons outside of agriculture or higher populated areas throughout California. Even though much of what makes Fillmore unique has diminished over time due primarily to increases elsewhere in Northern California, it remains an interesting place that retains some of its historic features while experiencing recent challenges such as traffic congestion caused by airport expansion plans

Fillmore was founded in 1867 by Jedediah Smith and named for General George Fillmore who served as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President from 1874 to 1877. In 1907, the fillmore post office closed and its ZIP code was changed to 95667; however, it has been inactive since then. The city of Fillmore had a population of 2,545 at the 2000 census; however, this number decreased to 1,914 at the 2010 census due to declining birth rates and an increase in out-migration from the city. The downtown core remains one of the most vibrant areas in all of San Joaquin County with numerous restaurants and businesses located within close proximity to one another. The history of Fillmore can be traced back many years before its current incarnation as a small town located adjacent to Interstate 5 on what is now state Route 24 (U.S. Route 101). In 1867 Jedediah Smith settled upon land that would later become Fillmore after purchasing it from his brother-in-law while traveling through Central Valley along I-5 on his way back from exploring new territory in Nevada Territory (the area now comprising Fresno and other cities). At first called simply "Quantrill", or "the place where Quantrill fought," this location would come to be known as Fillmore because General George WashingtonFillmore served as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President from 1874 until1877 when he resigned due to differences with President Rutherford B Hayes over Reconstruction issues following the American Civil War
