In 1865, James Eads founded American Water Works Company with three partners to provide water to agriculturalists and people within easy access throughout central California. By 1870 American Water Works had become one of the leading water companies in America with branches throughout California and Nevada. In 1872, Fillmore incorporated as a town under state law following approval by voters at an election held on November 4th . The town centred around its two main square blocks - Main Street and North Avenue - with stores, hotels and other businesses located along both streets.. The Fillmore Auditorium, named for the downtown Fillmore district in San Francisco where it was built, opened on December 15, 1923. The building was designed by architect Harman and Sons and is located in the heart of the city's "Financial District." The auditorium seated 2,500 people at its peak and was used as a venue for live music, exhibitions, and other events until it closed in 1978.
