He attended school in his home town and then studied law with an experienced lawyer, William Wirt. In 1852 he married Jane Addams and moved to Chicago as a practicing attorney. In 1857 he became Mayor of Chicago and re-elected two years later. In 1861 he ran for President against Abraham Lincoln but lost. From 1865 until his death in 1893 Fillmore was a U.S. Senator from Illinois.
