The Fillmore Mines were located about two miles northeast of present-day Fillmore and yielded gold and silver until 1870 when they were abandoned due to overproduction from the nearby Sutro Mine. A small mill still stands today near Highway 101 north of Fillmore that processed local grain for export beginning in 1865. In 1876 Fillmore Implement Works was established by J.O.Watson & Son with a facility for manufacturing wagons, carts and other transportation equipment under one roof for use throughout California. The firm continued operations until 1907 when it merged into International Harvester Company. A fire started by employees at an ammunition plant destroyed much of downtown Fillmore on December 5, 1889; what is now known as "The Fire" remains one of history's most destructive fires ever recorded in North America. The damages totaled $1 million ($ in current dollars). Reconstruction began almost immediately with new buildings being erected within a year and fillmoredom continuing to grow until 1906 when it reached its peak with 10,000 residents (10% of the county's total population). At this point there appeared to be little future growth potential so development shifted towards agricultural production which continues to this day as Oneonta Township occupies much of downtown Fillmore today while other portions have been developed into residential areas or commercial districts such as Bakersfield Junction Boulevard which runs along Interstate 5 just east of downtown Fillmore and connects Oneonta Township with Bakersfield across I-5 outside Downtown Pomona - becoming one of major metropolitan areas within California
