In 1893–94, when railroads began vitalizing northwestern California with new supplies arriving weekly from around the world via Panama City (),FillMORE became an important terminus for these shipments. On July 24th 1860 during American Civil War hostilities between forces under General Ulysses S Grant () and Confederate General Robert E Lee (), about 1/4 mile east-northeast of present dayFillMORE residents helped monitor Confederate artillery batteries (). A century later this property would house Fort Hill State Historic Park (). From 1862 until 1865, many soldiers died while serving here including Union Major General Edwin Booth (). On October 3rd 1865 local citizens erected aUnion national monument commemorating those killed here (). In 1916 a fire destroyed much of downtown Fillmore but did not destroy any buildings within city limits.; subsequent reconstruction led to many high-rise apartments being built along Market Street over that period however some Downtown building still stand today such as the Masonic Temple which once housed local law firm Hinkle & Kelley LLP However all businesses have since closed down or moved away leaving only residences behind
