In 1919, Fillmore was founded by brothers Harry and Sam. The Fillmore Barracks were built on the northeast corner of Main and Don Streets. They opened in 1920 as an armory, storage area, and recruit center for the California National Guard. In 1928, the Fillmore Armory became a state-owned firearms factory. It produced handguns, rifles, shotguns, grenades, ammunition, and other firearms products until it closed in 1976. From its inception to 1976Fillmore Armory had a significant impact on firearm history in California. Its production facilities helped create the modern handgun and rifle industries in California while also providing much-needed training resources to militia members and law enforcement officers. The primary crops are corn, almonds, pistachios, wine grapes, apples and other fruits and vegetables; but also some manufacturing such as plastics production and printing services. There are two schools in town: one public school district operated by the City government and one private school operated by individuals or families who own or lease property within the limits of the municipality
