Fillmore was founded in 1849 by Jedediah B. Fillmore as a town on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 25 miles west of Sacramento. In 1868, Fillmore merged with other smaller towns in what is now Contra Costa County to form the new city of Richmond. The merger made Richmond the largest city east of the Mississippi River and one of America's largest cities before World War II. It lost its status as a major metropolis during the war but regained it following the end of hostilities in 1945. The population of Richmond increased from less than 100,000 at its founding to 2 million by 1960; however, this growth came at a high cost to environmental resources and public services, especially transportation infrastructure which were insufficient for such a large population increase. In 1992, Richmond became an official city within California when it adopted legislation creating metropolitan areas throughout California. Today, Richmond is home to more than 600,000 people and serves as both the economic center for eastern Contra Costa County and eastern Contra Costa County's primary cultural center due to its location very close to Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area universities
The Fillmore Auditorium was a music hall and concert hall in downtown San Francisco, California. It opened on October 15, 1907, as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and was one of the first indoor venues to host concerts. The Fillmore was also home to the Golden Gate Quartet from 1942 until their move to Radio City Music Hall in 1951. The auditorium also hosted boxing matches, circuses and other events. In 1966, it became the home of Haight-Ashbury's Merry Pranksters before being demolished in 1978.
