The two towns were both founded on land donated by striking gold miners in what is now eastern Nevada and western Arizona Territory. Whether or not Fillmore actually benefited from this donation is open to debate; however, one thing is for sure: It would have been an extremely valuable center for trade and transportation in the region at the time. The city's origins can be traced back to 1853 when Levi Gould Fillmore (1809-1873) discovered gold along Ute Creek near present day Fillmore City Cemetery. He quickly erected a small cabin near where he found the precious metal while working his farm adjacent to the creek bed. After a year or so, he moved his operations to what is now downtown Fillmore where he continued until 1855 when he sold his interest in the town to Amos Gould (1810-1857). Amos had come from Connecticut originally but soon found himself working on porphyry mines in central California duringthe Gold Rush era (1848-60). Upon hearing about Gold Rush fever sweeping across North America, he decided that there was no place like California for him to stake out a new homebase, especially given its rich GOLD resource potential! In fact, many people who lived in northwestern California during this period conjectured that Amos may have brought similar fortunes back east with him when he relocated to San Francisco Bay Area – only without any luck! It wasn't long before things got started at fillmoor - businesses began opening up immediately which helped spur development around downtown including multiple banks, several hotels/motels etc., as well as various stores and other buildings such as warehouses which served as processing centers for local gold ore mining ventures...all while creating quite an impressive skyline view! By 1861 census records show that there were more than 100 residents living within close proximity of downtown fillingmoor! From here on out growth Rates accelerated due largely to numerous civic organizations supportive of further expansion including streetcars running through Downtown regularly supplemented by buses traveling between smaller communities located nearby...this all culminating into an exciting period fullof progressivism & dynamism characterized by fast population growth rates (& rapid infrastructure construction) even leading some contemporaries to dub it 'fillMORE CITY!" In 1871 Downtown Fillmore became City status under Mayor Samuel Catchingsbrooks leadership following passage of State Constitutional Amendment establishing San Francisco County!! With this change came increased responsibilities for management including expanded services such as police forces & fire protection; also becoming criminally liable within state boundaries!! This added layer of accountability helped spur additional economic development - aiding & abetting efforts led by Milton Hershey Co.(Eugene Kapp) founder/CEO Emery Rothrock(Rockefeller family oilman), Eastern Railroad Co.(Samuel Morse), ad infinitum !! subsequently resulting in booming business activity throughout much West Coast metropolis making "Downtown" one truly fantastic area today known affectionately among locals simply as "The Place".
