In 1876, Fillmore was founded by George Pullen and his wife Susan as a small town in the San Joaquin Valley. By 1880, the population had swollen to over 10,000 people and Pullen decided to build a school. The first building was a log cabin and it served as the town’s school until 1886. In 1891, the first courthouse was built on what is now Main Street in Fillmore. It remained in use until 1907 when it was replaced by the current courthouse. On July 4th of that year, Fillmore became an incorporated city with its own government. Fremont renamed it to honor General Manuel Micheltorena's visit to America on February 5,1849 when he became Acting President of Mexico after Porfirio Díaz resigned from office following his unsuccessful attempt to annex Californias Baja California peninsula into Mexico In early 1860s fillMORE was changed again to Fillmore because there were few places called Fillmore then in North America

Fillmore was a small settlement in Sonoma County, California, founded on October 6, 1851 by Augustus Fillmore and his wife Amelia. It was named for General David Fenton Fillmore who had led the U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Sacramento Valley floor of the San Joaquin Valley, and it became a major agricultural center with irrigation systems and other technologies that helped make it one of the most prosperous communities in California during the early years of the 20th century. The Fillmores were among America's first farmers; they grew corn, wheat, oats, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and nuts near their home in what is now known as Woodland Hills. They also operated a sawmill and gristmill at Fillmore Creek before becoming successful enough to established their own store and build a millrace called Bearna Creek which still flows through town today. In 1872 they married Anna Lillie Hull (1838 - 1912), daughter of Nathaniel Hull (1796 - 1865) an early settler in Sonoma County who had arrived from Connecticut two years earlier with his family. Anna was also a successful businesswoman; her store later became known as Anna Hull's transferred goods store which survives to this day serving both local residents and tourists alike. Anna Hull's death opened up another opportunity for fillmore growth when her brother-in-law John Pemberton organized several hundred people into ten separate companies to purchase 640 acres (2 km2) east of town along Bearna Creek whereupon fillmore began grows almonds orchards and other crops until 1915 when Prohibition made farming unprofitable across much of California so production ended altogether leaving fillMORE completely destroyed by fire fillsmilere rebuilt using modern technology but has not regained its former glory
