Fillmore was founded in 1853 by Captain John C. Fremont and his family. The town was named for Fillmore, California, which at the time was part of Mexico. A post office was established in Fillmore in 1855 and the first school opened in 1860. The first store opened in 1865 and the first hotel in 1870. In 1886, Fillmore became an incorporated city with a population of 1,500 people. In 1914, FillmoreVote became the first political county seat in California when it split from Kern County to form its own government. The City of Fillmore annexed neighboring towns of Lodi on March 6, 1915 and Ceres on October 15, 1916 to join its growing population. The Army Ammunition Plant was built at present-day Midway Drive and Ralston Road just east of downtown Fillmore during World War II as part of Project Mockingbird. It produced munitions for the United States military until 1973 when it closed due to budget cuts by President Richard Nixon's Department of Defense.[1] Today only a small parcel remains within the city limits of fillMORE while portions are located within Midway Park near Interstate 5 (I-5) across from San Bernardino Airport

Fillmore is a small city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population of Fillmore was 12,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area and is adjacent to951 miles (1,815 km) of Interstate 10. The Fillmore community began in 1907 when two brothers, Hiram and George Fillmore, bought a tract of land east of San Bernardino and developed it into an agricultural town with a post office and five stores. They named their town after Fillmore's home state of New York. In 1911 the brothers sold their property to John Denton for $5,000. Denton built a steam locomotive factory on the site which became known as "Denton's Depot". On July 1, 1912, the name of Fillmore was changed from "Denton's Depot" to "Fillmore". In 1916 night ridership on I-10 reached its first astronomical high when 2 000 people participated in a performance at the Fillmore Auditorium sponsored by The Hollywood Bowl Committee. That year also saw the opening of what would be called one of America's most famous nightclubs - The Palladium - on West Adams Boulevard in downtown Fillmore. In 1863, the Confederate States of America (CSA) and the Union United States of America (US) were fighting a two-front war. Ammunition was a key part of this conflict and during the early years there were many different types of ammunition. The first type of ammunition was shotshells which could be reloaded with new rounds. After a while, however, there were also rifled artillery pieces that needed to use round balls instead of shot. As these pieces got more powerful and advanced, they began using bullets that traveled in a circles instead of straight down like shotshells did. This made ammunition much more expensive and difficult to come by. Eventually, rifle cartridges became the standard for all artillery in the Confederacy and US armies started using them as well. This led to an increase in prices for ammo as well as less availability due to advances in technology.

The town served as the site of an annual meeting of the Mormon Church until it moved to Salt Lake City in 1910. Fillmore Presbyterian Church still meets in the town hall. They built a house known as Little America on the present day corner of East Main Street and West First Avenue. By 1865, two stores had been built in fillMORE - Jno C Bunnell's store on East Main Street (built 1868) and Thos Trimble's store on West First Avenue (1870). Fillmore rapidly became an important center for Mormon missionary work because it had easy access to good grazing land west of Sacramento County for farm animals and timber production.
