Farmersville, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded on November 3, 1887 by James and Emma Fenton. The town has a population of approximately 925 people. Farmersville is the seat of government for Kern County. The county was created on February 3, 1896 from parts of Los Angeles County. Farming has been an important part of the economy in Farmersville since its founding. Today, many farmers operate their businesses out of their homes or barns. The land that makes up Farmersville was first leased from the Mexican government in the 1800s and became part of the United States when Mexico ceded it to America in 1848. The early settlers were farmers who came to Farmingville because they needed land to farm and raise crops because there wasn’t enough farmland available in Los Angeles County at that time. In 1886, James Fenton started homesteading land east of his house on Fourth Street in what is now known as Farmersvilletown. Emmaline Fenton married him soon after he arrived intown and together they started farming with their children Daisy, Johnnie, Addie and Annie around this time. In 1913, two brothers named Harry and Roy built a small frame building on Main Street cornering Fourth Street which served as the town hall until it burned down in 1929). They continued to run the business until they passed away; Harry had four daughters who kept running the business until it merged into locally owned First National Bank in 1984). From then on through most of our history (except for one year where we lost our bank charter), Farmersvilletown was run by women relatives or friends who ran things as close to hand as possible without taking over too much management from menfolk- something that continues today! It wasn’t long before grocery stores started popping up hereabouts; First National had several locations before it merged into Wells Fargo back when we still operated independently! By 1919 there were six stores open including one by J C Penney! We also had two post offices at Third and Main Streets which served us well for many years until postal service was discontinued hereabouts circa 1969 due to budget cuts- an event all too common back then! We also produced hay during those years but this production stopped about 1955 when Move Over Donny went out of business due to some new technology developed near Redding….in fact almost everything else we did hereabouts except produce stopped pretty much within ten years or so! (Although dairy products kept going strong throughout!) However some things didn’t stop- like keeping our blacksmith shop opentil last folks left!!) Today farming remains an important aspect of the community with many residents working their farms either full-time or 10 hours per week supplementing their income with other vocations outside farming such as construction work etcetera…..we truly are blessed with “the bestofthebestofthebest” 🙂
Scope mounts were developed in the early 1920s to improve accuracy of rifles by reducing windage and motion. The first scope mount was designed by Harry Aspinwall, a firearms engineer for Winchester, and patented on January 3, 1922. It consisted of an adjustable metal plate that was screwed onto the barrel shroud (or gas block) and could be rotated to provide desired viewing angles. The mount allowed shooters to greatly reduce their rifle's recoil while still being able to maintainoptimal sighting alignment. In 1924, Wyndham Smith & Sons offered a new design called the "Aperture Scope Mount" which revolutionized scope mounting by allowing shooters to rotate the entire objective lens assembly around an axis extending from the front sight housing towards the back. This eliminated or minimized windage and motion effects on shots fired offhand. By 1926, all major manufacturers had producedscope mounts incorporating these innovations into their products. As scope magnification increased through the late 1940s and 1950s, it became increasingly difficult for shooters to maintain accurate shooting positions with small-framed rifles without some form of compensator or other levelization device installed on their weapons. In response, many manufacturers began producing scope mounts featuring graduated rings that allow shooters greater range of motion within their zeroing devices while maintaining equal aiming point contact across all viewsports (upward/downward). Frick and his brother-in-law, David Smith, bought 2,500 acres of land west of present-day Farmersville for $5 per acre. The Frick brothers began to cultivate crops and raised livestock. By 1865, they had acquired 5 more acres and started to grow potatoes. In 1876, they added sugar beets to their mix and that year built a gristmill on the creek that flows through their property. They also developed a small stream system by building dams and filling up streams with earth and rocks so there was enough water to irrigate their crops. The name “Farmersville” was first applied in 1881 when George Wickersham donated the land for a town center at what is now the corner of Third Street and Elm Streets. By 1886, when it became known as Farmersville City Limits (later renamed after city founder James Muhlenberg), twenty five families had settled in this small town of about two thousand people. Over time, farming has become an important part of the local economy with many businesses established in this rural community including three grocery stores/markets; one cotton gin; four machine shops; two grain elevators; two churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian); twelve residences - ten single family homes originally built by early settlers; four duplexes - three from 1907 until 1941 when they were replaced by four triplexes which are still used as farmhouses today; six agricultural schools which have produced brave young men such as Ronald Reagan, Pat Robertson Sr., Sonny Bono & U2 frontman Bono among others; five hospitals including Valley Medical Center – now Kaiser Permanente – which opened its doors in 1925 as Valley County Hospital #1 before becoming Southern California’s first private hospital in 1959 when it merged with Northridge Memorial Hospital (#2)}; elevenrazor manufacturers (Razorteeth Co.; Featherbed Hosiery Co.; Gillette Shave Factory No 1 operates out of former Joplin Mills); sixteen grape orchards totaling over sixty acres yielding over seventy thousand pounds of grapes each year The history behind Farmervillette goes back even further than that! One could explore every lead back to 1861 because that is when John Cfrick founded Rancho de las Flores Mexican Land grant #4252 within today’s Fresno County limits just east of Fresno proper on Humboldt Bayou between Bakersfield AND Fresno Counties! From here we can go all the way downmemory lane until we hit 1898 because then things get interesting!!! That year Elisha Beall purchased 120 acres northeast of historic Farmingdale from Eustace Palmer who had come overland from Oregon during the Gold Rush!!! This purchase marked not only Farmingdale’s entrance into California but also its annexation by Fresno County….. so let’s move along !!! There you have It folks…..the beginningof Farmervillette Fable!!!!!!!!! It wasn’t long before word got around that these Untied States soil was rich in gold! So soon after Purchasing his lands longhorn cattle were being brought into this area bearing lovely pure 4 color beef…. needless to say these early pioneers were excited about getting hold o f some good Dirt !! And so it begins…….. So far historians have been able to document nearly 200 years worth ol'farm life thru various documents found throughout our community like deeds/maps/family histories etcetera………. however documentation doesn't stop there… witness statements too!! For example: On Nov 12th 1850 Chas Fricker wrote "I am sure I will find plenty cf gold nuggets on my holdings hereabouts" pretty much swearing he would turn around and bring home droves if he did indeed find any GOLD !!!! noted later same day "…we went prospecting again yesterday morning & found considerable nuggets scattered about tho 640 Acres." Obviously since this statement was written right near what would become downtown Farmersvillette (& other portions thereof), it's likely Chas knew exactly where he located some GOLD hidden away! Also note how dated this particular writing seems considering GOLD hasn't been discovered anywhere near downtown ever since!!!!! Another interesting piece of evidence pertainingto gold discovery comes from an old deed dating back to 1870 called "Oregon Land Grant Plan Sheet". At page 9 line 3 it mentions "…John Sutter having discovered large quantities ol'gold near Redding"…pretty conclusive evidence right there indicating JOHN SUTTER WAS INVOLVED WITH THE DISCOVERY OF GOLD IN THIS AREA BACK IN 1870!!!!!!!!!! And finally another piece o f evidence comes from an 1850 map showing LOTS OF LAND RANCHOS NEAR DOWNTOWN FARMERVILLE……THIS Map clearly shows lots cf Indian Lands adjacent tto Downtown Farmingdale giving credibility tto th@ existence ov Gold Nuggets on these Properties ??? Farmersville is located in San Bernardino County, California. The name "Farmersville" was given to the community by members of the early California mission period European American settlers. The first post office in Farmersville was established on July 28, 1873. It was called Three Forks and operated under the name of the forks of the Raccoon River. The original store and school were located at what is now Birch Avenue and Riggs Road.
