During World War II most residents worked for defense contractor Glide Aircraft Corporation located just outside City limits producing military hardware such as tanks and fighter planes for the USAAF during World War II and afterwards until its closure in 1958 following the war's end. The first European to set foot in Fairfield was a Spanish sailor, Juan Rodríguez Caballero, who visited the area in 1775. The area would be named for Colonel James Fenton, who purchased land here in 1824. In 1847, the rails were completed from Sacramento to San Francisco and Fairfield became part of that train ride. In 1872, the California Central Railroad (CCR) built a line from Stockton to Fairfield and this made Fairfield an important town on the rail network. The CCR also built a depot here which still stands today. The depot served as the center of town until it was replaced by the present-day courthouse in 1912. Since its establishment as a town, Fairfield has seen many changes. In 1916, it became an incorporated city and has continued to grow since then. In 2002, it joined forces with neighboring Oceanside to form the City of Oceanside.
