Fairfield is a city in and the county seat of Kern County, California. As of 2010, the population was estimated to be over 320,000. The original inhabitants of what is now Fairfield were the Ohlone people. The first permanent settler in what is now Fairfield was George Armand who arrived in 1847. In 1859, John Sutter founded the City of Sacramento on an area that included present-day Fairfield. The townsite chosen for Sacramento was located at what is now known as West Side Highway 5 near Mayfair Drive and North First Street. In 1870, two brothers named Elisha Peabody bought 640 acres (250 ha) north of town from Thacher and stopped by name only upon its arrival thereon on their horseback forded the Kern River with their father’s old faithful mare “Nancy” to explore it; they called their new land Rancho Encore after Nancy's home farm back east where they had been born and raised. They soon sold off some parcels heretofore unoccupied to other settlers before building a cabin near Rancho San Rafael on July 12, 1870 which served as their headquarters until November 20th when they moved into their current building just south of Court House Square which still stands today overlooking King Street South/Hwy 99W across from City Hall Park & Civic Center Plaza www..fairfieldca.gov The following year violence broke out between Americans and Mexicans around this time leading to Samuel Winchester moving his family & goods eastward into Nevada Territory where he would establish Carson City NV but small communities formed all along US Route 66 corridor from that day forward including Promontory Point about 2 miles (3 km) west of present-day Riverside
