Many current residents were born or raised here; much recent development has been carried out within walking distance of downtown buildings such as Jack London Square and State Street Mall). In 1939, Fairfield became home to World War II veteran General Douglas MacArthur when he moved from San Francisco to command U.S Army forces fighting against Japan across Asia Minor and Burma (Myanmar).
