(Proctor renamed the land "Fairfield.") In 1827, George Washington Carver purchased some additional land from Sutter and developed it into a farm known as Carver's Valley near where it still stands today. In 1857, James Waddell foundedCW Depot at what is now downtown Fairfield with extensive wagon wheel production facilities which remain extant to this day. The depot served as an important transportation hub for farmers and workers who used CW products to improve their livelihoods throughout much of San Bernardino County during its early years. From 1862 until 1944, when California became a state, Fairfield was within San Bernardino County Limit 5 (later 7). Prior to that time it was withinlimit 3 which started east of Redlands/Rancho Palos Verdes proper

Fresno County was created on February 3, 1854 from parts of Tulare and Kern counties. In 1866 it was organized as Kings County and in 1872 it became Fresno County. The name Fairfield derives from a term used by early Californians to describe their agricultural land east of the Sutter's Mill: "The Field". The first post office at Fairfield opened in October 1860. The town site was chosen because its location near two major wagon roads made it easy for goods to move around the region. By 1870, over 100 businesses had been established in Fairfield, including several stores that became known as "the five kings." In 1881, the railroad arrived in Northern California and soon induced many farmers to move into the valley. This new development led to increased traffic on all of the county's Roads which caused wear on the tracks and necessitated repairs costing millions of dollars each year. A group of businessmen formed a company called the Pacific Railroad Company to fund these repairs with money they already had saved up from other ventures. They named their new company after themselves - Santa Fe Railway Company - an idea hatched by one of their own directors, George Hillyer (1822-1901). As railroads grew more important in American life, so too did trade withinFairfield City limits; by 1902 there were three grocery stores, six banks (two national), twelve auto dealerships and twenty-fourivery Wagons & Wagon Malls inside city limits alone! In 1916 when statehood granted California full independence from Mexico, FairFIELD Mayor Oscar Hammergren proclaimed July 4th as Mexican Independence Day! You can still see some old Apache Indian artifacts scattered throughout town today...
The first Europeans to explore Fairfield were the Spanish in 1542. The area was part of Alta California, until Mexican independence was achieved in 1821. In 1853, the first post office was established in Fairfield and it was called "Dominguez". The town has since grown and changed hands many times, with its current name reflecting its history: Fairfield is now a city in El Salvador.
