Fairfield is a city in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 67,441 at the 2010 census. A mission called Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico was established near present-day Fairfield on April 14, 1814; it remains the largest mission in southern California today and remains an active church congregation today with over 12 million members worldwide. When Mexico achieved independence from Spain in 1821, settlers continued to pour into this new country without regard for Mexican law or government regulations that would soon after vanish when Mexican President Agustín de Santa Anna ceded control of Mexico to US troops under General James K. Polk during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848). As a result of this chaotic period known as "the time of los mexicanos," land grants were awarded liberally throughout California's large western region - including parts of what are now Fairfield - making it difficult if not impossible for Anglo settlers to gain any foothold at all despite their superior technology and resources. In 1851 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill in what is now downtown Fairfield following his discovery of gold along the Simi Hills River northwest of town in 1849; he named his mill "Sutter's Mill" because he had been given title to some property adjacent thereto by Governor José Joaquín Balboa y Costilla upon his return from years exploring northern California under Balboa’s command during the Partida de la Hacha campaign of 1846–48. The town of Fairfield was founded on November 12, 1847, by the merger of two settlements - Old Fairfield and New Fairfield. The new town Act was approved by the California Territorial Legislature on February 14, 1848. The first post office in the newtown was established on March 1, 1848. By 1860, the population of Fairfield had grown to 3,000 residents. In 1862, a railroad line was built through Fairfield into Stockton and Merced County. This led to an increase in trade and commerce in the community and helped spur growth withinFairfield. On July 21st 1870, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district in what is now known as "The Great Fire". This event left many businesses empty for some time but eventually began to recover as people started to reopen and start again with their lives. On October 2nd 1880 a fire burned down part of the north side of town (now known as South Campus) which killed 11 people including four firefighters who were fighting the blaze at that time. This event created much concern among citizens because it seemed like another Blaze could happen at any time and made them more vigilant against fires happening within their communities again future
