Fairfield was founded in 1825 by Major Fairfield Osborn and his wife, Eliza. The town became a part of the United States in 1850 and saw growth until the Panic of 1893. The town’s heyday came during World War II when it was home to America’s largest munitions plant. The first settlement in what is now Fairfield occurred on May 10, 1824, when Captain John Sloat discovered land off the coast of California between Redwood City and San Francisco. The site had been occupied by Native Americans for centuries and there are reports that as early as 1776, Spanish explorers had sighted rows of jolly Roger trees at Point Arena. In 1825, Major Fairfield Osborn purchased land around Point Arena from Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla for $1,000 CAD. After years of hard work – he even built his own tools shed – Osborn’s family arrived in their new home on December 17, 1826. They were welcomed with open arms by local natives who called them “the good people” because they were so industrious at farming and ranching within minutes of their arrival. Osborn served as Mayor of Fairfield from 1830 to 1834; he also played an important role in creating the first fire engines used in America. In 1840, Osborn donated 4 acres (16 hectares) to lay out the Town Center which would later become known as Main Street. One hundred years ago today, Main Street still features a mix of old-school stores like Sears & Roebuck as well as modern boutiques like Nordstrom Rack & Co., all located near one another on Second Avenue South close to downtown Fairfield . During the late 1800s through into the 1920s there was great growth and progress taking place in both city and town due largely to two factors: easy access to transportation (mainly via water) combined with lucrative oil discoveries offshore during this time period; however during these times many residents chose not to move away due to social ostracism or economic hardship experienced during prohibition era . On July 1st 1906 violence erupted among thousands locals protesting high prices being charged for groceries at local grocery stores after state officials attempted passage of a bill allowing retail sales without paying excise taxes levied on liquor sales statewide
