In 1847, following gold discoveries at Saginaw Bay on the eastern edge ofmodern day Riverside County and at Adobe Valley in central Orange County (later part of Anaheim), Act 659 (1847) introduced legislation creating new counties within San Bernardino County including one for the newly discovered Gold Country located east of Palm Springs on what became known as eastern Riverside Avenue west of Canoga Park Boulevard. This would later become called Downtown Los Angeles with its original downtown boundaries today extending along Flower Street from North Figueroa Street east to Temple Street and west from Main Street south to Vermont Avenue. The towns north of Alma Road were founded by settlers who moved out from Fort Tejon during the Mexican–American War under General Cosse's command: Alpine, Beaumont Heights, Fillmore Heights and parts of Westminster Township north until they reached Pasadena Avenue where Fillmore Heights split off to form Pasadena
