In 1856, Eureka was founded by John C. Sutter and James H. starvation as a fur trading post on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1872, when gold was discovered in California, Sutter and his partners decided to settle in what is now Eureka. At first they used Indian labor to build their own mills but soon realized that this type of work was not feasible for a large town with limited resources. So they contracted out the construction of mill buildings and other small tasks to local builders. The first home built in Eureka was a wooden one-story house called the Parsonage which stood until 1910. In 1876, Charles Waddell arrived from Oregon with his families and set up a homestead on Ralston Creek about four miles east of present-day downtown Eureka. He leased land from the Sutter brothers for $1 per year and started building cabins and other structures on his property which he named Waddell’s Valley after himself and his family. By 1880, Waddell had developed an extensive agricultural empire which included crops such as barley, oats, potatoes, cotton seed, etc., raising sheep, cattle, pigs, horses and hogs; also ran a sawmill (now closed), gristmill (closed) and wagon factory (opened in 1886). In 1889 he sold all his lands except seven acres near the current city limits to Nathaniel Hawthorne who renamed it Hawthorne Heights after himself. After years of growth within its early days as an agricultural community due largely to its agricultural production capabilities rather than anything else around it – including industrial development – Eureka experienced rapid growth during World War II when many civilians turned out to beessential war workers providing goods like munitions manufacturing plants with essential equipment like toolsets (machine guns) and bearings needed for combat operations; meanwhile much commercial activity took place centered around downtown areas where there were several large warehouses/stations complete with associated factories converted into housing developments during wartime boom times

In 1848 prospectors discovered gold near what is now downtown Eureka under an old mill farmstead called Gold Hill; this so aroused attention that James Wolkentin set up shop there in 1849 selling shares in achemical claims weathered by waves on shoreline overlooking Folsom Lake across from town today. In 1850 gold seekers arrived at Andrus Bayou Landing which lies northwest cornerof present day Masonic Avenue to try finding water sources underground but without success; they soon abandoned their efforts after discovering an underground stream flowing through Menlo Park into San Francisco Bay which they named Hetch Hetchy (now part of Golden Gate Park). The first post office opened at Eureka on February 7th, 1851 with JF Doherty as receiver. On November 14th, 1851 mail service began between Sacramento and Mill Valley via stagecoach over open range country including many miles through dense oak woodland filled with giant sequoias; travel took weeks over rugged roads covered with snow each winter leading up to Yosemite Valley where passengers disembarked at various stops before continuing their journey by foot or horseback along majestic riverside trails ending up at Market Street Market Square opposite Telegraph Hall; finally travelers reached Yerba Buena Island where they unloaded their goods onto wooden boats moored offshore before proceeding back upstream aboard ferryboats downriver to Coloma or Oakland overnighting ashore most often arriving late next morning due to periods of high surf such as occurred during March/April 1865 when local newspapers reported people had drowned trying reach Oakland) - all this within less than two months following civil war victory when General George Armstrong Custer captured Fort Bridger (northwest cornerof present day Rodeo Drive & Sixth Street), thereby opening trade routes between Northern California and the rest of Western America for hordes supplies needed by soldiers fighting against Grant's Ulysses S Grant army marching through Central CA into Nevada Territory
