Eureka, California is a city in Northern California, located on the Eureka Peninsula. The population of Eureka was reported as 74,825 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the word "eureka" meaning "I have found it." Although first mentioned by Captain Charles Double in 1846 and named after him, the city's founding actually took place on October 20th of that year when two men from nearby Yuba City discovered gold while prospecting for irrigation water. They called their discovery Gold Rush Gulch and named their town after themselves - Eureka. The first post office in Eureka opened in 1858 and became an important center for trade with neighboring towns along the San Joaquin River. In 1907, construction began on what would become known as State Street which linked downtown with agricultural areas to the south and east. By 1912, over 50 businesses had been erected on State Street including a bank and three hotels - one of which still stands today (the Royal Woolen Mill). During World War II, many factories were built in downtown Eureka during the war effort such as Pillsbury Bakelite Company and Kaiser Aluminum Corporation. Over time however most of these businesses closed or moved out of town due to changing economic conditions. In 1951, Highway 99 was completed linking downtown with other parts of northern California and made Eureka an important stop for motorists traveling between Sacramento County to north or inland counties and points beyond. Today much of downtown retains its original character despite being completely redesigned several times since then including most recently during Measure C development which aimed to updatehistoric buildings while preserving their historic materials even if they are not used anymore.

The CPR built what is now known as Mail Street between First and Second Streets while S&GR built Prospect Street between Third and Fourth Streets. One of Eureka’s early industries was whaling, but this activity ceased when California became a state in 1850. In 1862, local entrepreneurs developed an unsuccessful attempt to establish a water supply from snowmelt near Mount Shasta. The town's water supply came from underground aquifers dug by local farmers beginning in 1865.
