Eureka, California is a city of over 200,000 people located on the Pacific Coast. The town was founded by John C. Fremont in 1852 as part of the Gold Rush. The first post office in Eureka opened in 1854. In 1863, Eureka became the capital of California and the location for most state government activity including the Supreme Court and Legislature. With the boom in production came increased competition and poverty within the city limits which led to several riots between1868- 1870. Despite these difficulties, Eureka continued to grow throughout the 1870s and 1880s thanks in part to new transportation methods like railroad construction and Leland Stanford's purchase of much of Rancho California in 1881 which opened up much more valuable land around town making it easier for people to get access to resources like copper and marble。 In 1887, Charles Goodyear invented vulcanizing rubber which helped reduce costs associated with textile production; this period also saw a resurgence in architecture due largely to advances made by Goodyear himself during this time (). During World War II (1939-1945), many industries were moved out of town due à la carte rationing programs meant t o provide employment o f locals who had lost their jobs during war years (). However, despite this setback (),EUREKA bounced back quickly aided by government investment such as revamping freeway systems (). On July 30, 1851, a group of men led by H.G. Wells discovered gold in the San Gabriel Mountains. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of California's history as a state.
