Eureka is located in the San Joaquin Valley, about 100 miles northeast of Sacramento. The city was founded in 1851 by Mormon settlers, and soon became a leading center for agriculture and commerce. Some believed that there were already devices available that could produce power from water found in rivers or lakes; others proposed creating an engine using horse power or wind energy instead of steam or electricity. Ultimately it was decided that an electrical generator be constructed by George Stephenson and Company under License No.: 727 from January 1st through December 31st 1861 (the same company that built London’s Crystal Palace). A worker from George Stephenson’s company installed the first electric lights in downtown Eureka on October 15th 1861! One hundred years later this milestone has been commemorated with a statue dedicated in front of City Hall! Inaugurated on September 6th 2009 by Mayor Jerry Brown as part of National Electrical Week!, the statue honors both George Stephenson and his company’s role in helping make modern America possible!

By 1870, following years of hard work and determination on behalf both Eureka residents and their new city government, Eureka had achieved significant economic success including becoming one of America's leading port cities with a population exceeding 100 thousand by 1901.
