However, the first gun to be legally manufactured in Eureka was a rifle called the “Peacemaker”. The Peacemaker was created by George Custer and it is considered to be one of the most famous rifles in American history. In 1876, two men named John Dolan and James Millington founded the Dolan Rifle Company in Eureka. They began manufacturing handguns and shotguns in their own shop located on Main Street. In 1907, they moved their company to what is now known as the Armory Annex on Depot Street. This shop became an important part of firearm history because it was where firearms manufacturers such as Colt Firearms, Savage Arms, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and Remington Arms met to discuss new products and ways to improve upon existing designs. In 1914, during World War I, Eureka became involved with the war effort when it became headquarters for United States Naval Ammunition Shipyard No.#1 (USNAY 1). USNAY 1 was responsible for processing ammunition all over North America for use by naval forces. As a result of its role in World War I, Eureka also gained a reputation as a munitions producing town. During this time period there were also several businesses that grew up around USNAY 1 including: Hayes & Halleck Machine Shop (now known as Hayes-Halleck Corporation), Arno Manufacturing Co., Pfeiffer Electric Supply Co., First National Bank of America (now Wells Fargo Bank), Alcoa Steel Works Inc., Wartime Housing Authority Headquarters Building (now City Hall), and Post Office #2 (now Veterans Affairs Medical Center). When World War II began there was an increase in demand for firearms due to the threat posed by Nazi Germany and Japan. This led to production at USNAY 1 slowing down but not stopping entirely; however, due to wartime conditions many businesses closed down or had difficulty getting new permits from authorities. At some point during World War II guns produced at USNAY 1 stopped being manufactured altogether which caused some degree of chaos within the industry because no one knew how they would be replaced… until they got replaced! In 1949 guns started again at USNAY 1 but this time with stricter regulations put into place following the attack on Pearl Harbor which caused extensive damage to plants across America including USNAY 1 specifically! After years of experimentation different companies started manufacturing firearms once again at USNAY 1 with support from government officials; however this time things weren’t going so well! In 1975 all operations at USNAY 1 were transferred back under jurisdiction of the General Services Administration which left many factories abandoned and without much hope for future success…. until they got abandoned again! Currently there are only a few remaining factories left manufacturing handguns here in Eureka; however these facilities are extremely outdated and will not produce any new firearms for sometime foreseeable future! Despite these setbacks recent efforts have been made by various organizations such as Handgun Control International(HCI) who have lobbied hard against any further production at these facilities given their current state—namely lack of security measures and potential danger for employees/ consumers alike! It is clear that while handgun production may still take place here occasionally there is always risk associated with it both physical AND cultural!
