Eureka, California was founded in 1851 as a small town on the Sacramento River. In 1856, the town was renamed after Humboldt County’s first millionaire gold miner, E.B. Goldsmithers. The name change came about because at the time of its founding, Eureka had no post office and only 2 residents! The town quickly grew and by 1861 it had 10 residents and a flour mill. In 1863, the first school opened in Eureka and soon there were also two churches (the Baptist and Methodist). A cotton gin was built in 1865 and during this time Eureka became a major center for trade with Nevada and other parts of California. By 1870, the population of Eureka exceeded 200 people! In 1872, the first railroad reached Eureka from Stockton through Red Bluff to connect with Fresno so that goods could be shipped upriver to San Francisco. This made farming easier as people could now sell their crops inland instead of shipping them downriver to be marketed abroad. In 1875–76, when US President Ulysses S Grant visited California he saw an opportunity to tap into new oil reserves near •Erebus• onshore off Northern California's coast. After conferring with his top advisers he ordered General George Bissonnet to drill wells totaling 6 miles (10 kilometers) deep at Donner Pass in order to find oil shale deposits beneath layers of older rock dating back more than 4 million years! Although initially successful G-B decided not to keep drilling due to high costs associated with extracting such large quantities of oil!!! However this did not discourage others from looking for oil within California’s borders especially as prices for crude began rising rapidly!!! Consequently over 120 wells were drilled throughout Humboldt County until production ceased in 1966!!!!
