When Europeans first set foot in what is now Eureka, California in 1849, they were greeted by a beautiful and serene area. The region was then part of the Mexican territory of Alta California. A group of American soldiers under the command of Captain James H. Brougham discovered gold in this region in 1848 and soon began to explore the surrounding hills for other minerals andaspaces for claim to America’s newest land grabber. The town that would be called Eureka was founded on July 14th, 1851 by Don Carlos Ferrero and his brother Manuel Ferrero after they located a vein of gold near where the Sacramento River flows into Lake Oroville. In 1864, when General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle at Bull Run Bridge over the Monongahela River neartoday’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; he left behind evidence that he had found new supplies of gold hidden among the boulders along the river banks east of Baltimore City limits.
