It is located on the San Diego–Tijuana border and is bordered by Tecate to the east and Carlsbad to the west. The first people to settle in Escondido were Mexican immigrants who came overland from Mexico City in 1821. By 1846, there were only about 100 residents living in Escondido. However, with Spanish-American War veteran Manuel Nieto's donation of land south of town for a public school and new homes for soldiers returning home after battle, Escondido grew rapidly. In 1850, it had a population of 471 people; by 1860 it had grown to 1,101 people. The city was incorporated on November 3, 1902 as part of San Diego County. On October 14, 1916 the United States Congress passed legislation creating the United States Air Force Base (USAFB) at nearby Otay Mesa which served as an area for development near then-Airport Valley Airport (now full name: Otay Mesa Airport). As development continued around USAAFB until its closure in 1991—prior to which it was known as "Valley Forge"—the airport area became one of Escondido's most popular areas for shopping and dining because of its close proximity to major shopping malls such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy's Department Stores as well as world-renowned restaurants such as The Olive Garden and Jardin de France restaurants. In recent yearsEscondido has seen some growth due to tourist arrivals from inland areas such as Anaheim Hills or Tijuana while still remaining within commuting range into downtown San Diego via I-8 corridor or Interstate 5 bus routes

Escondido, California is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 381,827 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of San Diego County and the largest city in both San Diego and California. The City of Escondido had an estimated population of 388,719 as of July 1, 2019. The site for what is now Escondido was originally part of Mission Santa Barbara de Alcala on shoreline suburbia east of downtown San Diego. In 1853 it became part of Rancho El Cajon Mexican land grant to José Joaquín Miller and his wife Margarita Costilla; this area eventually became known as "Miller Heights." On December 6, 1875, an act by the Board of Supervisors created the city limits which extended from present-day Hillcrest Avenue south to Interstate 5 (now US 101), then west to Pacific Ocean Boulevard (later State Route 163). This area became known as Downtown Escondido. In 1886 Mayor Amedeeño García developed what would become one of the first streetcar systems in North America when he started operation on Market Street between First Avenue and Fourth Street in Downtown Escondidos – now known as Broadway – using horse-drawn wagons running along a two-mile track that crossed old Indian Wells Creek before terminating at another streetcar line near Terminal Island Ferry Landing on Point Loma Boulevard. At first service ended at 4 p.m., but later hours were added so residents could work duringowntown storms such as hurricanes or typhoons. A fire destroyed most of downtown Escondido on October 30, 1907; however Mayor George Hirsch rebuilt it with public money and within two years had everything back up and running including streetcars again which ran until 1949 when they were replaced by buses due to budget cuts caused by World War II restrictions on transportation meant for more urban areas like Los Angeles or New York City rather than inland communities such as Imperial Beach or Petrified Commerce.[1] The original Depot Annex building still stands today across First Avenue from Broadway Subway Station (renamed Rexall Place after its ownerRexall Drug Stores) - it has been used for various businesses over the years including a local Chinese restaurant until recently when it was purchased by an organization working to preserve historic buildings around town before conversion into apartments/condominiums;[2][3] currently vacant since early 2018 despite numerous offers from developers who have proposed demolishing it On November 17th 1861 voters approved Measure M making Donuts King Capital District centered around Donuts store located at 7th & K Streets Historic district built: 1860s Sqft #2 [4]; current home to Museum Of Asian American History moved there in 2016
