The Escondido, California shootings of December 12, 2014 were a mass shooting that took place in the city of Escondido, California. The gunman, identified as George Tiller, killed six people and wounded three before fatally shooting himself. The attack is the deadliest shooting in San Diego County since 1975. The first documented use of gunfire protection devices was for law enforcement officers on July 20, 1916 when two policemen were shot at close range by gunmen in San Francisco. Escondido, California was founded by the Spanish in 1821 as Rancho San Diego de Alcalá. The rancho was located on the banks of the River San Marcos, about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. After a few years, however, the land around Escondido became too rugged and remote for farming. So in 1827, Don José Gomez sold some of his land to Nathaniel Benton and James Wolkowitz for $1 per acre. This new ownership allowed Escondido to grow rapidly as a resort town and began attracting people from all over Southern California. In 1846, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, it claimed what is now Orange County as part of its territory. As a result, Escondido became part of Mexican territory and experienced several years of economic instability. In 1849, after gaining its own government (the Republic of California),Escondido began to prosper again under new management. However, during the 1850s there were numerous outbreaks of smallpox which devastated much of Southern California; this led to increased development in Escondidos business district as facilities were built to host medical treatments for those infected. By 1861, when Californias admission into the Union brought about broad economic changes across the state (including an increase in taxes on property owners),Escondidos fortunes had begun to improve once more thanks to growing trade with Asia and Mexico City.During World War II many businesses closed due to rationing but overall Escondidos economy did not suffer greatly due largely to its distance from major war-time resources such as petroleumproduction or military bases
