Escondido, California is a city located in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 298,824 at the 2010 census. It forms part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area and is known for its beaches and nightlife. The first permanent settlement in what is now Escondido was made by Spanish explorers on November 17, 1769 during the so-called Alta California campaign of Spain's War of Independence from France. After Mexican independence was declared on October 20, 1821, Escondido became part of Mexico City. In 1848, when Arizona was admitted to the Union as a state and Escondido became part of that state's newly founded municipality system, it remained an unincorporated community within San Diego County until 1912 when it incorporated as a city. In 1916 voters approved incorporation into the city limits of Los Angeles; this decision created one large urban center near downtown Los Angeles but allowed for continued growth in Escondido because it had been annexed by LA prior to its merger with other cities. The annexation also increased business opportunities for Escondido businesses due to their close proximity to LA's commercial district and easy access to Interstate 5 and other transportation arteries outside of town. During World War II much production took place at nearby Rosiethe Arsenal munitions plant which produced ammunition for both Allied forces fighting in North Africa and Europe as well as U.S.-made ammo destined for Japan; these plants were closed after the war ended but have since been redeveloped into mixed uses including luxury housing developments and retail stores serving some 2 million people annually who visit the area surrounding Rosiethe Arsenal National Historical Park.
