Escondido is a city in southern California, and its population of over 120,000 makes it one of the largest in the region. The city has been inhabited by various cultures for more than 10,000 years and today is home to a diverse array of businesses and residents that include both locals and immigrants. The first people to live in what is now Escondido were Native Americans who built their homes on high hills overlooking the harbor. In 1870, Spanish traders arrived in Searchlight Cove with vessels carrying goods such as hides and feathers from east coast Mexico. They began trading with local Indians before moving on to build Mission San Diego de Alcala (now part of Cathedral City) on Point Loma. In 1872, William Jones founded the townsite of Wilmington at present-day Escondido after purchasing land from José María Peralta. The town was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Costilla y los Indios (Don Antonio Lopez), a Mexican general who fought against American forces during the Mexican-American War. Santa Anna had fled Mexico amid civil war between his brother Maximilian I (the Hapsburg emperor) and Porfirio Díaz (a leader of an independent northMexican dynasty). After being pardoned by President James K. Polk, he journeyed downriver to San Francisco where he met Jones and agreed to sell him land at Coaster Island near Miramar beach for $2 per acre ($10 per square foot). Jones platted Wilmington into blocks with streets running east-west instead of north-south like many other cities at this time; this feature helped make it easier for settlers to find their place within the new community. By 1875 Wilmington had 2 stores, 5 dwellings, 1 school house/orphanage, 1 post office/hospitality house/laboratory, 3 public baths/cafeteria & 3 churches: twoMethodist & one Catholic; also several small breweries (& saloons). Many early families lived close together in large groups along alleyways called "terrazas" which led from houses back up towards downtown street level where they gathered each morning for eggs or coffee while watching dogs play outside or read newspapers indoors before going about their day... The name Escondido comes from Rancho Tejon de la Clayoquena, which was first acquired by friars Junípero Serra and José Antonio Mejía in 1769 and then sold to Juan Bautista Corral y Tijerina in 1824. At this location were two Franciscan mission complexes: Santa Rita del Valle and La Purísima Concepción de Jesús (known today asMission Hills). This land including Mission Valley were purchased by Miguel Hidalgo on January 15th 1821 from Felipe Carrillo de Mendoza during Mexican War I for $3 million dollars (). On July 26th 1861 following Mexican Independence Day Pancho Villa raided Rancho Tejon y las Animales killing 14 Americans including three priests and six lay missionaries associated with Mission Dolores before driving off into hills near present-day Hillcrest Village. On November 2nd 1912 a group led by Royce Wickersham organized an expedition called "The Gold Rush" which discovered gold at Sinaloa Creek adjacent to what is now Cathedral Park.. On August 12th 1914 another group led by John Nance Brown discovered gold at Fillmore Road just south of current day Eastlake Village! both these discoveries are still considered historic events withinEscondida’s community today! After World War II began there was an increase in business activity due to increased demand for housing after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in an entire citywide rebuild ().
