Today's economy is based largely on tourism with a strong focus on beachfront properties along both coasts such as Escondido’s world-famous Rincon Beach Resort & Spa and downtown Escondido’s lively nightlife district called “The Foothills” which features rowdy bars and restaurants close to San Diego’s beaches but also offers some quiet streets near luxury condominiums in preparation for summertime golf tournaments at Torrey Pines Golf Club or Atascadero Country Club; among other things

In 1984, Mayor Arturo Perez announced plans for an ambitious $1 billion redevelopment project called Plan Nord which would add new housing, businesses, schools and other infrastructure across six blocks stretching from First Street south to Olive Avenue eastward; this plan failed to materialize however due largely to opposition from local business owners who vociferously opposed any development within walking distance of their properties
Escondido was founded in 1887 by Edward P. Elliott and James N. Haskell as a small community of about 100 people. The town grew rapidly, but its size made it difficult to carry out the many plans that were put in place to improve the area. In 1916, Escondido became an incorporated city with a population of over 1,000 people.
