Built by Mission Santa Ana priests and Spanish soldiers under Ulysses S. Grant during Mexican rule in 1846-1848, Isla de la Esperanza became part of Alta California when Mexico surrendered on January 12, 1853. On October 1, 1857 Escondido joined the Union as a municipality within San Diego county
