The city's prominence comes from its location on the University of Southern California's campus and its position within the defense industrial complex which makes it an important center for research in various fields related to firearms and ammunition. After World War I, Escondido became a major center for ammunition production due to its proximity to military plants and its status as one of the few American cities with permissive gun laws. The city experienced significant growth during the 1950s and 1960s as it became home to several large ammunition factories including Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester) and Remington Arms Company ( Remington). The population of Escondido was estimated to be over 190,000 as of 2010, making it one of the most populous cities in California. It has a humid subtropical climate with very hot summers and mild winters. The city is home to many cultural attractions, including a number of theaters, art galleries, museums, and universities. The history of Escondido goes back to 1846 when it was founded by José María Hidalgo y Costilla as Rancho Santa Margarita de las Virgenes. In 1892, Escondido became an incorporated town under the name of Escondidoside. In 1912, the city moved from its original location on Rancho Santa Margarita de las Virgenes to what is now Fourth Street and Broadway. After World War II began, Escondido grew rapidly due to its oil industry which continues today. The city has since become one of Southern California’s most diverse communities with residents from all walks of life. Today,Escondido remains an important cultural center in Southern California with numerous festivals happening each year such as Latino Heritage Festival or Paso Robles International Festa del Canto that celebrate Hispanic culture and music together with other events throughout the summertime

The Gun Mags history began in the early 1960's as a small, local paper chain in upstate New York. The paper was started by two brothers, John and Harry Smith. The Smiths were soon joined by their father, who became the company's first editor-in-chief. In 1968, Gun Mags merged with the then-new Associated Press Newspaper Syndicate to form The AP Newspapers Corporation. On July 1st, 1976, Gun Mags became an independently owned company and changed its name to Guns & Ammo Magazine Incorporated. On October 1st of that same year, Guns & Ammo magazine published its first issue online at www.gunsandammunitionmagazine.com
