It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after Tijuana, and third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest after Seattle and Portland. Contents History Edit The first European to visit Escondido was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20 of 1542 when he landed on Padres Bay.[1] In 1821 it became part of Mexico City and attained its current territorial boundaries as part of that country's territories south of Baja California. From 1846-1848 it served as capital of Alta California under Mexican President José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla. In 1850 Escondido became an independent municipality within San Diego County with a population of only 50 residents[2] By 1870 the population had reached 2,500 people[3] The first post office opened in Escondido on April 7, 1875,[4][5][6] and by 1890 there were over 100 businesses operating in town.[7][8] In 1915–1916 Escondido was designated as one of America's "Angeles" by President Woodrow Wilson during his New Deal program to promote regional economic development through half-a-dozen Regional Development Banks administered by him. The name change came about because then Mayor John Leland had petitioned for a new baseball park to be built in downtown called Angel Stadium which would have been paid for with bonds issued by the city; however this idea never materialized because lack of funding caused problems for other projects throughout Los Angeles County at the same time (and later). The present day skyline seen from Point Loma which began construction in 1916 includes two large icons: The Golden Gate Bridge and Interstate 5 (I-5). I-5 runs directly across downtown from east to west making it one of the few major freeways running through town center without curved lanes or exits leading into or out of it. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Escondido were Manuel Nieto and Gaspar de Portolá on November 26, 1769, while exploring northwestern Mexico as part of their exploration of the New World. They named their small settlement after Juan Bautista Escondido y Salinas who had earlier left Mexico for Rancho Santa Fe in present-day Orange County. A post office called "Esquadra" was established at this site on October 24, 1846. In 1875, it became "Escondido". The heyday of Escondido began in the 1920s when its residents built a giant air-filled casbah near downtown which served as an amusement park and nightclub until it closed in 1933. During that time period, many famous people such as Al Jolson and Bing Crosby lived or visited here including Roy Rogers who filmed his popular cowboy movies here between 1927 and 1932 at various studios around town before moving out to Hollywood proper. In the 1940s during World War II much activity took place here due to nearby Naval Base Yokosuka's horrendous air raid shelters – some still extant today – where over 350 marines from all over Japan were held until relieved by American forces on September 21945 just days before Japan's surrender; these submariners would go on to form one of America's most famous naval fleets during WWII. A post office called "Isla Vista" was established at this site on May 51877 but it was discontinued two years later because there were already too many posts withinSan Dieguito County for Isla Vista to handle alone so it became an unincorporated community again with no mail service being provided any longer by either county government.. On January 1st 1905,Chico Menendez founded a dairy farm east of town that grew into one of Southern California’s leading milk producers; he also produced baking powder which led to his nickname “Bing” because his products could be seen flying off shelves above local grocery stores in town during early morning raids by postal inspectors looking for contraband candy cigarettes (see photo).
