In 1903, Escondido Mayor John Skelton hosted the world’s first pistol shooting competition at his home on Long Beach Boulevard. The event was organized by Dr. George Weiser and featured pistols from all over the world. It is said that these competitions started the modern pistol shootout style of shooting that we know today. On December 5th, 1911, Escondido residents James Purdy and Charles Whitman shot and killed nine people at an office building on Long Beach Boulevard in what is now known as the Whitman Massacre. The event is considered one of America’s worst mass shootings. Many people believe that handguns were not involved in this massacre and that it was instead perpetrated with rifles

Escondido is a city in Southern California, United States. The population was 62,853 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Pacific coast of Los Angeles County and is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers arrived in Escondido in 1821 as part of Rancho Santa Margarita de Anza. The town was founded by John Leland and his wife Jane Randolph on October 14, 1875, following the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad's route from San Francisco to LA. On April 15, 1880, both towns were merged into one municipality under the name "Escondido". The city post office opened on July 5, 1886; it closed on December 12th of that year due to heavy mail volume. It wasn't until 1912 that a full-time police department was established; it became an all-encompassing law enforcement agency on November 1st of that year. In 1916 the City Council approved an ordinance establishing a fire department which served residents from inception until 1952 when it joined with Valley Fire Department #2 to form ValleyFire Department #1. On January 1st, 1925 Mayor Winton White designated Escondido as an Air Force Base Area for use by military personnel during World War II; this designation lasted until 1969 when Malibu became anAir Force Base Area again (it remains so today). In 1957 Escondidos first high school students graduated from Palomar High School; they would go on to attend nearby Northridge High School where they would eventually achieve success in athletics and education alike. A new City Hall was completed in 1959 and named after Mrs. Hilda Bogan who had spearheaded many improvements within the community including creating a park system for residents and funding for parks throughout the city center as well as other municipal programs throughout her career within city government – she is known locally as "The Lady Who Shaped Escondido." From 1960 through 1965 there were several changes made to zoning regulations which led to increased growth rates within downtownEscondidos limits while reducing or eliminating single family homes along Mission Boulevard between 2nd Street and 3rd Street resulting in more than doubling of currentresidential size since then! In 1971-1972 another major renovation project took place across Mission Boulevard between 2nd Street and 3rd street comprising replacement/refurbishmentof nearly every building within sight utilizing stateoftheart engineering techniques making these days some of most modern structures built anywhere! Eventually this also ledto increased business activity downtown which has supported continued growth rates ever since despite occasional attempts by developers to strip away much of what makes ESCONDIDO such a unique community cultural attraction! Today ESCONDIDO continues its proud tradition(s) of being one OF THE most vibrant cities IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!

Escondido is a city in the San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 27,695 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to downtown San Diego and lies on the eastern edge of the San Diego metropolitan area. The town began as an agricultural stop on a stagecoach route between San Bernardino and Los Angeles in 1869. A post office called Escondido was founded in 1876, and the first mayor was Wm. H. Everett. The discovery of oil in 1923 led to rapid growth of Escondido and its adjoining communities, which are now known for their agriculture or coastal seaside industries such as fishing, tourism, and shipbuilding. In 1959 Escondido became home to North American International Trade Zone (NAITZ) headquarters for outdoor recreation products dealers from around the world; NAITZ remains an important economic engine for Escondido today. The original mission of Mission Trails Park—later renamed Point Loma National Monument—was to provide a natural habitat for migrating seabirds that had been scarce near shore due to land usage by humans since prehistoric times. Aspen Grove Nursery School opened its doors on Thursday Island Road in 1915 as one of only two schools open during World War I with no tuition charged by parents or children until after Armistice Day that year; it closed in 1951 because of lack of students and money from school district coffers dried up days after Christmas when war ended without major conflict abroad In 1922 Pioneertown Elementary School moved from across 5th Street south into what is now Point Loma Shopping Center; that same year saw the opening of Donnybrook Park which consists of a baseball diamond, playgrounds (including a slide), picnic areas (including grills/potato gardens), swimmer’s cove/pool complex with beach access via jetty/paddleboat dockage, tennis Courts #1 & #2 (now used as retail spaces), Donnybrook House (built 1925), Donnybrook Golf Course(opened 1932)), Pebble Beach Drive-in Theatre (opened 1953), NW side streets were realigned east-west arterial road alignment including present day Loop 101 interchange - much like today except back then it also included access from Overseas Highway just east off exit ramp
The town of Escondido began to form in the early 1800s when a group of Spanish settlers arrived in the area. The town was named after the Empire County seat, San Diego. The first building in Escondido was a small adobe cabin built by Juan Rodriguez and his family. In 1857, Captain James Cook landed on San Diego Bay and anchored near present-day Escondido. As sailors disembarked for supplies and repairs, they set up a small store at what is now Jack London Square. A year later, another store opened at what is now First National Bank Park. With so many people living in one place,Escondido quickly grew into a busy trading post and commercial center during the late 19th century. By 1907, Escondido had more than 50 businesses and 2,000 residents. During World War I,Escondido played an important role as both an airfield and munitions production plant for the war effort. After the war ended,Escondidos growth slowed but never stopped; it has since grown to be one of California’s most populous cities with over 1 million residents today
